Malta's Capitals
Malta's Capitals
Investigate Malta’s ancient Mdina and the current UNESCO capital of Valletta on this comprehensive Yachting Land Adventure.
Take the scenic route to Malta's historic capital, the Mdina which is located on a hill with stunning views over the island. It is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient, walled city with a mix of medieval and baroque architecture. Stroll through the city's narrow streets and let your guide introduce you to the Mdina's 4000 years of history and provide an orientation to the town itself. From the bastions, enjoy the sweeping views stretching all the way to the coast. Take advantage of some free time to independently visit either St. Paul’s Cathedral, Palazzo Falson or another historic site pointed out by your guide. There is also the option of souvenir shopping or just enjoying a hot beverage and cake at one of the several cafés.
Next, continue to Valletta – the present-day capital. Walk past the Auberge de Castille - today the office of the Prime Minister - to your stop at the Barrakka Gardens, perched high above the Grand Harbour. The gardens provide a shady retreat from the bustle of the city, and the balcony has one of the best views in Malta. Visit the monumental St John's Co-Cathedral which houses the masterpiece of the Italian artist Caravaggio, ‘The Beheading of St John’. Enjoy a walking tour past landmarks like the new Renzo Piano Parliament building and Our Lady of Victories Church.
Proceed to visit Casa Rocca Piccola, a 16th Century Palazzo which is still a private home of a Maltese noble family. Its history goes back over 400 years to an era in which the Knights of St. John decided to build themselves a prestigious city to rival other European capitals: Valletta. The first owner of the house was an Admiral of the Order of St. John and it was sold later to a Maltese nobleman.
At the end of the tour you will enjoy some Maltese nibbles served in a lovely square (weather permitting). There is some free time to enjoy Valletta at your own pace before heading back to the ship.
