Explore the rich history of Cagliari on this excursion with panoramic views from the top of Monte Urpinu, a stroll through the Old Town, including seeing landmarks like the Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Bastion of St Remy.
One of the oldest Italian cities, Cagliari is the only Phoenician colony, the ancient "Karalis," on the island that survived through the millennia, and under different foreign rulers who left traces of their epoch and their culture. This modern appearing capital of Sardinia island with its busy harbor and an old nucleus surrounded by fortifications, was built by the Pisans in the 13th century.
Leaving the port, your tour starts with a panoramic drive around Cagliari taking you to the top of Monte Urpinu, from where you should be able to enjoy a beautiful view over the city and the Golfo degli Angeli. This is followed by a walking tour of the Old Town, You visit the cathedral of Santa Maria, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries and built in the Pisan Romanesque style. It is noted for its doorway, paintings and the two precious pulpits, carved in 1160 and given to the church by the Pisan rulers .
You also see the bell tower and the so-called Elephant tower, built by the Pisans. Continue to the Bastion of St Remy for splendid views over the city and its harbor. This Bastion overlooks the historic Marina district, with its maze of narrow streets and ancient buildings. At the end of your walk you rejoining your coach and returning to the ship.
